If you’ve been following along with my content, you’ll remember my bold proclamation that this year would be the Best. Year. Ever.
So, is it?
I’ll resist the temptation to list the countless things I’ve done in a futile attempt to justify why 2018 HAS been the Best Year Ever, as that never really was the point. Rather, let’s consider the underlying motivation behind the proclamation – mindset.
Whether or not these 12 months find themselves atop the “Best Years of My Life” leader board is irrelevant. The reasoning behind my resolution had (and still has) more to do with the idea that I’m in control of what happens; approaching each day from the perspective of making that day (along with the day before and the day after) the best it possibly can be creates the mindset I’m looking for. If today sucks, the year is certainly not ruined. If today is fantastic, it absolutely does not guarantee that my resolution will come true.
Life is a roller coaster, and while the first half of this year has seen its’ share of highs and lows, the notion of approaching each day from the perspective of finding the best in each and every day serves me well. Even in those moments when it’s assuredly NOT a Best. Year. Ever. moment, I know it’s just that, a moment in time.
Happiness, richness in friendships and family, health and relative prosperity all find themselves at my table as we cross into the second half of the year, and for those reasons and more I am immensely grateful. I’ve been to new places, met new people, and expanded both my personal and professional horizons in ways I could never have anticipated when I made that January resolution. For all of those reasons, 2018 has absolutely been what I said it would be.
Life is not a spectator sport. You are not a victim of your circumstances. Even if your life to date hasn’t delivered up to your expectations, it doesn’t mean you can’t affect the outcome of what happens from this point forward. Adopt the Best. Year. Ever. mentality, and set about the journey with the same newfound perspective as mine and don’t be surprised when you look back on the journey with a different viewpoint than before. I’ll see you in 2019 – which most assuredly will be the Best. Year. Ever.
