Core Values: Positivity

Positivity is more than just an attitude or perspective

5/12/2023 | Paul Kiewiet, Pursuit of Purpose

In my continuing series, I explore twelve core values that can serve as guideposts for you as an individual, or you as a leader of an organization. I believe knowing and committing to your values is critical to great achievement. When you hit decision points where the road splits and you must choose your next step, your core values are your sign posts to reach your best self living your best life.

Positivity is an essential characteristic for both individuals and organizations. It can help build a strong foundation that leads to success and satisfaction. Positivity is more than just an attitude or perspective; it is a core value that can guide our thoughts, actions, and interactions with others.

For organizations, positivity can help create a positive work environment that fosters productivity, innovation, and growth. A positive work environment can improve employee morale, reduce turnover, and increase overall job satisfaction. Employees who feel positive about their work are more likely to be engaged and motivated to perform at their best. Positivity can also have a ripple effect, spreading throughout the organization and influencing the way that people interact with each other and with customers.

To make positivity a core value, organizations can start by creating a positive culture. This can be achieved by promoting positive communication and relationships among employees, recognizing and celebrating achievements, and offering opportunities for personal and professional growth. Leaders can also model positive behavior by demonstrating positivity in their interactions with employees and customers.

Individuals can also benefit from making positivity a core value. A positive attitude can help you navigate life's challenges with resilience and optimism. It can also help you build strong relationships with others and foster a sense of community.

To develop positivity as a core value, you can start by practicing gratitude. Focusing on the positive aspects of life can help shift our perspective and promote a more positive outlook. Additionally, you can cultivate positive relationships by surrounding yourself with people who uplift and support you.

You can also develop positivity by engaging in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment. Pursuing hobbies and interests that bring a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction can help foster a positive mindset.

Many companies are known for using positivity as a core value, and they have built their brand around it. Some of the most well-known companies that prioritize positivity include:

  • Zappos - Zappos is an online shoe and clothing retailer known for its customer service and positive work culture. The company's CEO, the late Tony Hsieh, was a strong believer in the power of positivity and has made it a core value of the company. Zappos offers employee perks like free food and a fun work environment, and their customer service representatives are trained to prioritize positivity and creating a positive customer experience.
  • Life is Good - Life is Good is a clothing and accessories brand that focuses on promoting positivity and optimism. The company's logo is a smiling stick figure with the words "Life is Good" written underneath. They also donate 10% of their profits to the Life is Good Kids Foundation, which helps kids in need.
  • Patagonia - Patagonia is an outdoor clothing and gear company that has made sustainability and positivity a core part of its mission. They prioritize environmentally friendly practices and promote positivity through their messaging and campaigns.
  • Southwest Airlines - Southwest Airlines is known for its fun and positive work culture. The company values employee happiness and believes that happy employees lead to happy customers. They prioritize positivity through their hiring process and training programs, and they encourage their employees to have fun and be themselves while at work.
  • Ben & Jerry's - Ben & Jerry's is an ice cream company that has made social and environmental responsibility a core value. They prioritize positivity by promoting fairness and equality, and they encourage their customers to get involved in social justice issues through their activism campaigns.

These companies are just a few examples of how positivity can be used as a core value to build a successful and fulfilling business. By prioritizing positivity and creating a positive work culture, these companies have been able to attract and retain top talent, build strong customer relationships, and make a positive impact on the world around them.
