Monday Minute

What are you FOR?

3/22/2021 | Kirby Hasseman, The Monday Minute

Text Version:

Hey this is Kirby Hasseman with the Monday Minute!

Here is something I have noticed over the past several years in America.  We spend a great deal of time, energy, and money to define ourselves by what we are against.  We spew vitriol at the thing we are against and we insult anyone that might dare to disagree.  It comes from both sides of the political spectrum, and across countless other topics as well.  We have come to define ourselves by what we are against.

But what are you for?

Spending all of our time and attention on what we don’t like in the world is totally counter-productive.  First, it gives the very thing we espouse to be against tons of time in our brain.  We are renting our headspace to people we don’t want to be there.  And we are doing it on purpose!

In addition, what we focus on in our life tends to expand.  Wayne Dyer talked quite a bit about this.  “When you realize that what you think about expands in your life, you get really careful about what you think about!”  By actively focusing on what we are against, we give that the chance to expand (and annoy us even more)!

Instead, I think it makes so much more sense to focus our time and attention on the things we are excited about.  By redirecting our energy and focus to the things are passionate about, we hijack our brain in a good way.  We take control and start to create the change we want to see in the world.

My suggestion is this.  Stop posting anything to social media today about things you are annoyed with.  In the interest of transparency, no one cares anyway.  Instead, announce a project you are excited to tackle, a non-profit you are going to donate to, or a business you want to start.  Or heck…brag about your kids!  By doing so, you can start to showcase what you are for in the world…and hopefully, that will start to expand for you!

Thanks so much for watching the Monday Minute.
