The Charm of it All

The little detail that makes a big impression

9/2/2026 | Maya Magnussen, Trend & True

It is time to go back to school, and the trends of the summer are carrying over into the halls. We are finding ways to personalize and decorate just about everything nowadays. I am seeing bag charms on purses, gym bags, work bags, and now backpacks.

The rise in popularity of maximalism is creating a space for people to get creative and express themselves through an abundance of accessories and trinkets. Bag charms, similar to a key chain, can be cute, sleek, personalized, or silly. From initials and nameplates to chapstick holders, or miniature versions of the bag you might attach the charm to, they are getting very creative. Any bag can be one of a kind now when you add your favorite accessories. Whether you’re at Five Below or Hermés, you can find a bag charm anywhere.

Some people are loading up their bags with all of their adorable or fun charms, embracing maximalism. And others are keeping a single staple charm on their favorite purse. The point is to make your bag curated to you. It doesn’t matter how you style it, because it is fun and unique no matter what.

The most notable bag charm would be the Labubu, which blew up online in 2025. Now we are seeing bag charms of all kinds. The “kidult” trend I talked about previously is taking the bag charm market by storm. Stacking up bows, iconic character figures, plush toys, and chains with more charms attached, your bag now shows off your style, and your interests. I personally have the Sanrio character, Kuromi, on my bag, along with another strange little character I picked up. There are countless ways to style a bag charm; Kate Spade even offers a guide to making theirs your own.

Is your backpack too similar to someone else's in your class? Bag charm! Got an old purse you’re bored with? Bag charm. Does that gym bag not look appealing enough to pick up anymore? A cute bag charm might be the motivation you need.

Whatever you carry, adding a little charm is an easy way to make it unmistakably yours.
