Accepting What Is

What happens when challenges feel insurmountable?

2/14/2025 | Paul Kiewiet, Pursuit of Purpose

In your world as a promotional products professional, success often hinges on persistence, adaptability, and the ability to navigate setbacks with grace. But what happens when challenges feel insurmountable? When your plans unravel, your expectations go unmet, and the future you envisioned suddenly looks nothing like reality?

I’ve been there. There was a time when my marriage, my livelihood, and nearly everything I had built for myself seemed to collapse at once. The uncertainty was overwhelming, and I found myself clinging to what should have been rather than accepting what was. A teacher appeared in my life when I discovered "The Work" of Byron Katie that I realized the suffering wasn’t coming from my circumstances—it was coming from my resistance to them.

Katie teaches that loving whatever life brings is the only way to avoid suffering. "Loving what is" sounds simple but is one of the hardest things to do, especially when what life brings is not what you planned, dreamed of, or worked for. Yet, it is in that acceptance where we find peace. Similarly, the words of Eckhart Tolle in A New Earth struck a deep chord within me: "Life will give you whatever experience is most helpful for the evolution of your consciousness. How do you know this is the experience you need? Because this is the experience you are having at this moment."

In our industry, setbacks are inevitable—orders fall through, clients change direction, supply chains falter, clients go bankrupt or stiff us. But what if instead of resisting these realities, we approached them with acceptance and curiosity? What if, instead of wishing things were different, we asked ourselves, "How is this experience shaping me? What lesson is here for me to learn?"

Values-based decision-making becomes even more critical in these moments. When challenges arise, it’s easy to make fear-based choices—grasping at short-term solutions, compromising integrity, or allowing frustration to dictate our actions. But when we lean into our core values, we find clarity. Integrity, resilience, adaptability—these guide us through turbulence and ensure that our decisions align with who we are and who we want to become.

Accepting what is doesn’t mean complacency; it means releasing resistance so we can respond with wisdom rather than react out of fear. It means recognizing that every challenge presents an opportunity for growth, even if it’s not the path we originally envisioned.

So, as you navigate your own journey—whether in business or in life—consider this: What would change if you stopped resisting what is? How much more energy would you have to move forward if you embraced each experience as a necessary part of your evolution?

Success in our field, and in life, isn’t about avoiding obstacles—it’s about learning to move through them with grace, purpose, and an open heart.

When you find yourself railing against reality, stop and change what you can. Be as intentional and unemotional as you can and understand that the one thing you can change is your attitude. Here are some ways to let go of the frustration and find constructive ways to move forward.

  1. Pause and Assess – Before reacting to a challenge, take a breath and evaluate the situation with curiosity rather than frustration.

  2. Focus on Solutions, Not Problems – Instead of dwelling on setbacks, shift your mindset to identifying alternative strategies or new opportunities.

  3. Align with Core Values – Use integrity, adaptability, and resilience as your guiding principles in decision-making and client interactions.

  4. Control Your Attitude – While external circumstances are unpredictable, your mindset and response are within your control.

  5. Learn from Setbacks – Treat each challenge as a lesson. Ask yourself what can be improved and how you can apply these learnings moving forward.

  6. Stay Present – Avoid getting lost in regrets about the past or anxiety about the future. Handle what is in front of you with confidence and clarity.

By integrating these principles into daily practice, you can navigate the life's inevitable ups and downs with greater resilience, purpose, and success.
