The "Stop-Doing" List

Your Secret to Purposeful Goals in 2025

1/10/2025 | Paul Kiewiet, Pursuit of Purpose

As January unfolds and a new year begins, many of us feel the pull to set goals and create resolutions. But resolutions often fizzle out, weighed down by their lack of focus and sustainability. If you're like 23% of people, you've already quit them. Only 36% will successfully keep them to February 1st.  This year, I invite you to take a different approach: instead of only adding to your list of goals, create a "Stop-Doing List."

The Stop-Doing List isn’t about restriction for its own sake. It’s a strategic practice to identify behaviors, habits, or commitments that detract from your success, energy, and focus. By stopping what doesn’t serve you, you free up time and mental clarity for what truly matters.

We often default to doing more in our pursuit of progress. But success doesn’t come from doing everything; it comes from doing the right things. Imagine how much more powerful your efforts would be if they were directed toward what aligns with your purpose and passion, rather than diluted by distractions.

Creating your Stop-Doing List can:

  • Clarify priorities: You gain a sharper focus on what’s truly important.

  • Reduce burnout: Eliminating energy-draining activities prevents overwhelm.

  • Enhance fulfillment: By saying no to what doesn’t serve you, you say yes to what does.

Start by reflecting on three key questions:

  1. What are you deeply passionate about? Think about what lights a fire in your soul. These are the causes, activities, or goals that inspire you to push through challenges with enthusiasm.

  2. What activities do you love doing and feel great while doing them? Consider the tasks or hobbies that leave you energized, proud, and satisfied. These activities often align with your natural strengths and talents.

  3. What can you make a living at? Reflect on the practical side of purpose: what skills or contributions can help you sustain your lifestyle while pursuing your passion?

Once you’ve answered these questions, examine your current commitments and habits. Identify what doesn’t align with your passions, strengths, or goals. These are the candidates for your Stop-Doing List.

Here are some common behaviors to consider:

  • Busywork: Are you saying yes to tasks that don’t truly matter? Are you doing $15 per hour work when you could be making $100 per hour?

  • Negative self-talk: Stop feeding the inner critic that holds you back. Catch yourself anytime you're not impeccable with your word about yourself.

  • Comparing yourself to others: This habit drains your energy and undermines confidence. You are unique and bring special value. Differentiate, don't imitate.

  • Overloading your schedule: Learn to say no to commitments that don’t align with your priorities. Create a "No, Thank You" List and be ready to say no to the unimportant.

  • Procrastination triggers: Identify and remove the distractions that keep you from focused work. Think - What's the Best Use of My Time Right Now! And do it.

Once you’ve identified your Stop-Doing items, implement your list with intentionality:

  • Write it down: A written list is a powerful tool for accountability. Try a Task List of the steps that will bring you toward your bigger goals. This helps you construct your goals in concrete terms and make you feel more confident that you will attain them. This makes you feel in control of your life rather than having events controlling you.

  • Set boundaries: Communicate your decisions to those around you, especially if others are involved in the activities you’re letting go.

  • Track your progress: Regularly review your list and reflect on how these changes have impacted your life.

2025 can be the year you achieve goals that align deeply with your purpose and bring you joy. By focusing on what you’re passionate about, engaging in activities you love, and doing work that sustains you, you’ll move toward a fulfilling life.

Remember: success isn’t just about doing more. Sometimes, it’s about doing less — but better. Start your Stop-Doing List today, and watch how it transforms your year.
