Annin Drops Confederate Flags; alphabroder Offers Occupational Apparel Guide

6/25/2015 | PromoJournal Staff, Business News

Annin No Longer Making Confederate Flags
Annin Flagmakers, the oldest and largest American manufacturer of flags, announced Tuesday that it no longer will make or sell Confederate flags.

The New Jersey-based company, which sells to retailers and to the promotional products industry, made the announcement as the flags have become the focus of a national debate in the aftermath of the attack and killings at the African Methodist Episcopalian Church in Charleston, SC. Annin has two confederate flags,   the Confederate battle flag and the Confederate field artillery flag, listed on its website.

"Flags are very powerful symbols, and clearly this flag has become a symbol of a negative aspect of our past," Carter Beard, the sixth generation president of the company told The Star-Ledger. "For some people, it represents something very negative."

Monday was the deadline for other potential buyers to bid on the company, and no new bids were submitted. The transaction is still subject to court approval, with a 10 a.m. hearing set for Friday in U.S. District Court in Des Moines, IA. HALO attorneys filed motions that allow for a sale of Newton Manufacturing within 30 days, so June 30 is set to be the transition date of HALO’s ownership.
